We all know about the phases of the Moon and that it’s cycle that runs about 29 days, but how many of you know about the Moon’s 19 year Metetonic Cycle?
The ancients knew about it because they tracked the moon’s cycles in detail. They were able to ascertain that a Synodic period of the Moon, (when the Moon returns to the same phase), is exactly 29.531 days long. They were then able to discover that there is a natural 19 year rhythm between the Sun and the Moon. That is… every 19 years a lunar phase and solar day of the year will have the same calendar count.
Many ancient peoples worked with the Moon’s Metetonic cycle to predict eclipses. Today scientists still use it during flight planning for lunar spacecraft missions and in calculating the date for Easter.
